Accept Responsibilty

by Al Rexroat

We all must accept responsibility for the various functions in our lives. If we don't accept responsibility, someone else will. In a free society, we as citizens must accept responsibility for the education of our children, for the work we do, for our government at all levels, for medical decision we make, for the lifestyle we choose, and for the good and bad decisions we make.

In socialist and communist societies the government will gladly accept the responsibility for our lives. They will tell us where we can work and what we can do for a living, they will tell us where or if our kids can go to school, they will tell us where we can live and who we can live with, they will tell us if and when we can get medical services, and they will make all of the important decisions in our lives.

What does this have to do with us? We must accept the responsibility for the past mistakes we have made in the insulation industry, and we must work to correct these mistakes or someone else will gladly accept this responsibility.

Contractors have taken the easy way out when facing industry problems. We have reduced the insulation thickness or changed the materials in order to "value engineer" projects. We should be selling more insulation not less.

Contractors need to market our services better. We must accept the responsibility for our portion of the industry. If we do not accept responsibility for that which we can control there is someone out there who will, the non-union contractor.

Our labor force must also take responsibility for past transgressions. We must install insulation materials with the highest level of quality. We must work in a professional and safe manner. We must look like professional insulators when we go to work. We must avoid the use of illegal drugs always and alcohol when working. We must work eight for eight. If we do not accept responsibility for the way we work, there is someone out there who will.

The non union contractor is working around the fringes of our market today. The non union contractor with his non union labor is willing to accept responsibility for our work. There are plumbers performing our work who will accept the responsibility. There are fitters performing our work who will accept the responsibility. The Illinois Regional Insulation Contractors Association is committed to working with Local 17 to create a more professional atmosphere for our customers.

As contractors and labor we need to accept this responsibility for the men and women who came before us and for the future generations of insulators to come.
